Volunteers are needed for several projects of SyrCOM. We are seeking volunteers with a variety of skills, in particular programmers, computer users, Syriacists and Arabists. If you would like to help, please do not hesitate to contact us even if you may not have anything specific in mind. We will find something for you to do!

Here are some projects you can help us with ...

  • Programming

    • Lexical Database.

Program a user interface to the SEDRA database (a database of the Syriac language) and the equivalent Arabic database. The program should have a component to help lexicographers mark correspondences between the two databases. The program should display Syriac and Arabic (we have the fonts).

Programming Language: C/C++ under Windows. We have a C/C++ library for database development.

    • Scanning.

Program to scan Syriac printed text. The program should be able to learn the shapes of new fonts (assisted by the user).

Programming Language: C/C++ preferably under Windows.

    • Hypertext Manager.

Program a development system for our Syriac Hypertext Project.

Programming Language: C/C++ preferably under Windows.

Please note that we need the source code as well as the executables.

  • Editing Entries for the Syriac Hypertext Project

Compiling and editing encyclopedic entries on Syriac studies from various reference books. A knowledge of foreign languages will be helpful (German, French). For more details, read the second report under the description of the Syriac Hypertext Project

  • Data Entry

Entering Syriac Texts in a transliterated form or using MLS 3.2.

  • Sending us Syriac Texts

We are compiling an electronic library of Syriac texts. Please send us any texts you have. The texts will be placed on the internet.
